Abandoned Cart Sales: Recovering Carts by Voice, End to End

Most cart-recovery stacks send a reminder and wait. Arrowhead AI calls instead — and finishes the purchase inside the conversation. The agent reaches the customer, asks what stopped the order, solves the actual objection with live data, and places the order on the call. At Tata 1mg, this ran end to end with no human on the line and converted up to 15% above the client's own human tele-sales team.

Why reminders fail and calls close

An email, SMS or push notification asks the customer to come back and finish alone. A reminder can leave the original objection unresolved — a price question, for example, may need an answer before the customer returns. Human calling teams can solve objections, but they reach only a fraction of abandoned carts, and every cart has a different reason, so one script fits almost nobody.

A voice agent changes the arithmetic. It can expand calling coverage within the campaign's contracted capacity and use live data to address the customer's specific reason for dropping off. The agent holds real conversations and completes tasks end to end — it is not an IVR and not a chatbot with a phone number.

1. The recovery flow

  1. The cart is abandoned, and the drop-off event enters the campaign.
  2. The agent calls the customer and confirms it is the right person before discussing the order.
  3. It asks what stopped the order — and listens, because every cart has its own reason.
  4. It solves the objection with live data: a cheaper equivalent, a stock check, a delivery answer.
  5. It sends the payment link and stays on the line while the customer pays.
  6. It confirms the order on the call.

The order is placed on the call. The customer does not have to reopen the app.

The flow above is deliberately described at a general level. The detailed operating workflow is configured per client and is not published.

2. Call timing

Two different timings matter here, and Arrowhead AI states both separately because they measure different things.

Platform trigger capability. Arrowhead AI can trigger a recovery call within a minute of the drop-off event.

Deployed campaign timing. In the Tata 1mg deployment, the trigger fires two hours after the event. That two-hour window was specified by the client, so the call reads as a helpful follow-up rather than an instant reminder. Timing is customer-configured: each client sets its own window.

Neither figure should be read as the other. The platform supports a sub-minute trigger; this client chose two hours.

3. Objection handling

The reason a cart stalls decides what the agent does next.

Price. The agent searches for a cheaper equivalent product or package and offers it on the call. In the Tata 1mg deployment, when price stopped an order, the agent found a cheaper equivalent package, checked its stock and rebuilt the order around it inside the same call.

Product doubt. The agent answers from the client's own catalogue and order data. Where it cannot answer, it transfers live to a human or arranges a callback rather than guessing.

Delivery timing. The agent checks real delivery slots and books one that works.

Trust. The agent confirms the order, the price and the delivery date back to the customer before payment.

Objection handling is conversational rather than a scripted decision tree. The agent handles interruptions without losing context, so a customer who moves from price to delivery and back stays inside one conversation.

4. Acting on the call

A recovery call only beats a reminder if the agent can act. Arrowhead AI agents send payment links during the conversation, pull data in real time, and transfer to a human on-call. In commerce deployments the agent also adds and removes SKUs, upsells, and suggests a larger quantity where that unlocks a better discount for that customer's profile.

In the Tata 1mg deployment, a single recovery call orchestrates 28 live API integrations and takes more than ten in-call actions — catalogue search, stock check, patient confirmation, slot booking and order placement — with no human on the line.

5. Language

Recovery calls run in the customer's language, not the brand's. The agent switches language on-call based on the customer's preference and handles code-mixed speech, including the Hindi–English mix people actually speak, within a single sentence. The Tata 1mg deployment operates across 10+ languages. Where a client needs a language that is not yet supported, it can be enabled in two weeks.

6. Proof — Tata 1mg

Tata 1mg deployed Arrowhead AI on abandoned carts. The agent ran the recovery conversation end to end — diagnosing the reason for the drop-off, finding an alternative where price was the blocker, checking stock, confirming the patient, booking the delivery slot and placing the order — with no human on the line.

Measured against the client's own human tele-sales team on the same activity:

  • Up to 15% higher conversion than the human-agent benchmark. Tata 1mg had expected the AI to manage 70–80% of a trained agent's performance; it beat the human benchmark instead.
  • Up to 30% higher connection rate.
  • Live in two weeks from kickoff to production calls.
  • 28 live API integrations orchestrated inside a single call.

How this was measured. Conversion means a completed paid order placed on the recovery call — not a click and not a later revisit. The baseline is the client's own human tele-sales conversion rate on the same activity, over approximately one month from go-live.

These are one client's results on one deployment. They are customer-specific outcomes rather than a benchmark every merchant will reproduce.

Consent. Consent is collected and owned by the client, not by Arrowhead AI. It originates in the client's own channels — their website or checkout flow, product sign-up, and marketing or advertising opt-ins. Arrowhead AI calls only the contacts a client supplies, on that client's instruction and against the consent basis the client holds. Arrowhead AI does not source, purchase or enrich contact data.

Opt-out. Opt-outs are handled in line with the applicable telephony UCC and DND regulations. A customer can opt out on the call itself; the record is suppressed and the opt-out is passed back to the client's system so it holds across channels.

Retry limits and calling windows. Both are configured per campaign, within the limits set by regulation and by the client's own policy.

Scale. Calling volume auto-scales up and down to handle demand, within the capacity contracted for the campaign and any client-configured campaign limits.

8. Deployment and data residency

The inputs to go live are the call flow and a set of existing call recordings. From those, a fully customised agent can be live in under two weeks.

The agent connects to the client's commerce, order-management and CRM systems through custom integrations built per system. Arrowhead AI does not publish a list of named commerce platforms; integrations are confirmed per deployment.

Data residency is agreed per deployment and documented in the customer contract. The default is a global deployment; an India deployment is available for clients with data-localisation requirements or a stronger privacy posture. Deployment options include multi-tenant shared infrastructure for fast onboarding and a dedicated single-tenant environment for full isolation. Exact hosting regions are confirmed during procurement rather than published.

9. Frequently asked questions

Can an AI voice agent recover abandoned carts by phone?

Yes, end to end. The agent calls after drop-off, asks what stopped the order, solves the objection with live data, sends the payment link and places the order during the call. At Tata 1mg this ran with no human on the line.

How soon after drop-off should the call happen?

That is a campaign decision. Arrowhead AI can trigger a call within a minute of the drop-off event; in the Tata 1mg deployment the client chose a two-hour window so the call reads as a follow-up rather than an instant reminder.

Can the AI place the order itself?

Yes. It checks stock, selects a delivery slot and places the order during the call, with payment taken through a link sent in the same conversation.

Which languages can recovery calls run in?

The agent switches language on-call and handles code-mixed speech. The Tata 1mg deployment operates across 10+ languages. A language that is not yet supported can be enabled in two weeks.

Where is our data stored?

Residency is agreed per deployment and written into the contract. The default is a global deployment, with an India deployment available.
